worth seeing
The Zwischenahner Meer - the "pearl of the Ammerland".
The sea is 550 hectares, on average 3.50 meters deep and easy to travel with a rented boat, a sailing dinghy or one of the passenger ships of the “White Fleet” with three berths. You can also swim in the Zwischenahner Meer or cycle around it over a distance of around 12 kilometers. On the way you might get to know the Otterbäke in the north, the Halfsteder Bäke in the east or the Auebach. These are the small inlets to the large sea, which is the third largest lake in Lower Saxony after the Steinhuder Meer and the Dümmer. The unique sea was formed around 12,000 years ago at the end of the Vistula Ice Age, when part of a salt dome collapsed around 300 meters below the clayey land. It is already 250 million years old and stretches from Delmenhorst near Bremen via Leer to Jemgum through the underground and had become softer and more fragile due to groundwater. The geologist calls this sinkhole when he speaks of a suddenly forming hole at his feet.
